Breast Reduction

If you are here, learning about breast reduction surgery, then you know firsthand the real suffering that larger breasts can cause (either for you or someone you love). Women with large breasts can experience pain in their back, shoulders, neck and bra-strap line. In addition, they can develop rashes and have difficulty finding comfortable fitting bras. Sometimes they wear oversized shirts and loose or baggy clothes to hide their chest.

If you are wearing a sweatshirt in the heat of summer to hide your breasts and the attention that comes with large breasts, then keep reading. Women with larger breasts can have mixed feelings about their chest. What might have once been exciting turns frustrating when breasts keep growing and growing. It can lead to a feeling of self-consciousness where you want to hide in plain sight.

People stare. Clothes are hard to find. Running is impossible. Swimming draws too much attention. How do we address this? Breast Reduction is a safe plastic surgery procedure to alleviate pain and discomfort from enlarged breasts while restoring a youthful, shapely look. And YOU get to decide how small we make your breasts during your surgery.

How is Breast Reduction surgery performed?

Breast Reduction surgery is tailored to meet each women’s specific needs. How the surgery is performed depends mainly on two things: 1) the size and shape of the breasts at the time of surgery, and 2) the desired change in volume (or size). Resulting scars are minimal – typically a “lollipop scar” around the nipple and straight down to a version of the “anchor” where part of the scar is neatly hidden in the bra-line. In many cases, Liposuction helps smoothen transitions and improve the overall result.

When you come for your consultation, you will go over your goal size with Dr. Tannan. It helps to have examples from online before and after galleries (like our gallery) to show your inspiration or your goal. Dr. Tannan will show you what going “as small as possible” would like, and how that differs from maintaining fullness, like having something between a C or a D cup.

Is your goal to be able to move through the world braless? Or would you like to still maintain fullness, just perhaps not quite this much fullness? This is an important question to ask yourself so you can inform your surgeon with your true preferences. Dr. Tannan employs a superomedial pedicle technique that allows her to maintain breast tissue and fullness from the upper part of your breast while removing the weight from below. The amount we remove is up to you. The example in the video is someone who wanted to go as small as possible.

Is Breast Reduction right for me?

If your breasts weigh you down, literally making it hard to find bras that fit, Breast Reduction might be the solution for you. It’s important to note that this operation does not treat back pain from other causes. However, it helps when women have deep grooves in their shoulders from the bra holding up heavy breasts all day long.

Are you thinking of having kids in the future? Wondering about how breastfeeding can be affected? These are all questions to ask your board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Tannan is a mom who breastfed her two kids and wants to make sure she does everything in her power to preserve that possibility for all of her patients. Have an honest discussion about your concerns so you can weigh the risks and benefits together and decide when is the best time for you.

If you are worried that you might need another breast reduction in the future, rest assured, that is incredibly rare. Women undergo major shifts at puberty, during pregnancy or menopause, and with weight gain. Unless you have a major medical condition or go on to gain major weight after your breast reduction surgery, you are not expected to need repeat breast reduction procedures throughout your life.
