How to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles
Do you raise your eyebrows on video calls, when talking, or in photos? Turns out most everyone does. This repetitive motion can lead to wrinkles over time. Forehead wrinkles are caused by a number of factors, including sun exposure, smoking, and the natural aging process. In this blog post we explain the many ways that wrinkles develop and different ways to get rid of forehead wrinkles.
As you age, your skin loses its elasticity and collagen production decreases. This leads to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Additionally, the muscles in your forehead contract every time you make an expression like raising your eyebrows or frowning, causing forehead wrinkles. Those lines can make us look older than we are or make us appear tired when we are not.
We have many options to treat forehead wrinkles. They range from skincare with retinols, to neurotoxin injections like Botox, to surgery to redrape loose skin. Read on to learn which approach to getting rid of forehead wrinkles might be right for you.
Where do Forehead Wrinkles Come From?
Forehead wrinkles come from repetitive action of the muscles of your forehead. Our facial muscles are uniquely tethered to our emotions. Feelings of surprise, concern and frustration are all visible on our faces. The forehead muscles that contribute to the expression of these feelings, and the formation of wrinkles include:
- Frontalis: This long muscle spans the entire forehead from your brows to your hairline and is responsible for raising the eyebrows.
- Corrugator supercilii: This muscle is responsible for bringing the eyebrows down and toward the center as in a frown.
- Procerus: This muscle is responsible for drawing the eyebrows together and works with the Corrugator supercilii to create a frown.
Before we can explain how to get rid of forehead wrinkles, first we must understand where they came from. Forehead wrinkles form when the muscles in the forehead contract repeatedly. This muscle contraction can be caused by a number of factors, including:
- Facial expressions: Every time you make an expression, such as raising your eyebrows or frowning, the muscles in your forehead contract. Over time, this repeated muscle contraction can lead to the formation of forehead wrinkles.
- Aging: As you age, your skin loses its elasticity and collagen production decreases. This can lead to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.
- Sun exposure: Sun exposure can damage the skin and accelerate the aging process. This can lead to the formation of wrinkles, including forehead wrinkles.
- Smoking: Smoking can damage the skin and reduce collagen production. This can lead to the formation of wrinkles, including forehead wrinkles.
Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles Before They Set In With Skincare
One of the best ways to treat forehead wrinkles is to prevent them from forming with skin care that will protect your skin from wrinkles. The key ingredient? Retinol! Retinols are a type of vitamin A that can help to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. They work by stimulating collagen production and increasing cell turnover.
To use retinols, simply apply a small amount to your forehead before bed. Be sure to start with a low concentration and gradually increase the strength over time. Retinols can cause dryness and irritation, so it is important to wear sunscreen with regular use.
At Tannan Plastic Surgery our top retinols are Retinol Skin Brightener (best for our younger, acne-prone and oil-prone patients) and Wrinkle and Texture Repair (for our older women with dryer skin). W&T includes an emollient to soothe the skin while retinol works deeper. Of course, Refissa is another great prescription retinoic acid we use for difficult to treat skin.
Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles with Neurotoxin
Botox is an example of a neurotoxin that can be used to temporarily relax the muscles in the forehead. Injection of Botox, Dysport, Daxxify or NewTox can reduce the appearance of wrinkles caused by muscle contraction because it limits your ability to contract those muscles in the first place.
Botox is injected into the forehead muscles using a very tiny needle. The procedure is relatively painless and takes only a few minutes. The results for Botox and NewTox typically last for three months, and Dysport and Daxxify can last four months or more before needing another treatment.
To enjoy a wrinkle-free forehead, you need to keep up with the neurotoxin injections. Delaying treatments means that, after the product wears off after a few months, your forehead goes back to its old habits. With that comes the wrinkles.
Morpheus8 Treatments to Improve Skin Texture and Reduce Wrinkles
Morpheus8 is a minimally invasive skin resurfacing treatment that can be used to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, including in the forehead. This technique uses radiofrequency energy to create tiny micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, which results in the production of new collagen and elastin.
While the Botox is weakening the muscle, Morpheus8 allows us to improve the skin texture and collagen so that the result is a glowing look with reduced fine lines and wrinkles. We can’t inject Botox in every wrinkle and that’s where Morpheus8 really shines. It helps us target the entire face and rejuvenate from the inside out.
Morpheus8 has been shown to be effective in reducing the appearance of forehead wrinkles. Morpheus8 is typically performed in a series of three treatments spaced out one month apart, and then maintained with treatments on an annual basis.
A Browlift to Reduce the Appearance of Forehead Wrinkles
A Browlift is a surgical procedure that can be used to simultaneously lift the eyebrows and reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles. It can be performed using a variety of techniques. That said, the most common approach is to make an incision in the scalp and then lift the forehead tissue and redrape the excess stretched out skin of the forehead.
A Browlift is a more invasive solution for forehead wrinkles than Botox, but it is also a more definitive procedure. While Botox lasts for three months, a Brow Lift should last for years. Recovery from this procedure typically takes two to four weeks and results last for years to come.
Facial surgery unfortunately does not have a permanent result because there is no permanent stop to the facial aging process. Skin continues to lose elasticity and your collagen production continues to slow down. To optimize results from Browlift surgery, we recommend a multi-pronged approach with regular skincare and Morpheus8 treatments to treat the top layers of skin while surgery addresses the deeper facial layers.
