Am I a Good Candidate for Plastic Surgery?
Are you longing for a look you once had, or one that you’ve always desired? This could be the full, perky breasts you enjoyed before kids, or a sharp jawline, free of drooping jowls, or perhaps fixing a crooked nose? Maybe you recently lost a lot of weight or had a baby and want to address loose skin, a C-section shelf or even sagging boobs. You may be reading this because you’ve grown unhappy with a particular trait such as how your breasts look and feel when you go without your push-up bra, or persistent fat in your arms and thighs. You may be frustrated with your overall appearance and you’re curious about whether plastic surgery is an option to fix that. The thought of making a change may feel exciting, but it may also be intimidating. As a mom and female doctor, I get that. So, have a seat and let’s chat about whether you are a good candidate for plastic surgery.
Many people are unhappy as they look in the mirror but aren’t sure what can be done, or if the options are safe. Plastic surgery is a good option for some, but it is a medical procedure requiring recovery time and a good level of health. If you’re thinking about it, here are some things to consider.
Am I a Good Candidate for Plastic Surgery?
You may be a good candidate for plastic surgery if you are generally healthy and do not smoke. For your overall safety during the procedure, it is best for you to have a body mass index (BMI) of less than 35.
Being psychologically healthy and maintaining awareness of the risks involved is also important. I will give you instructions for how to prepare for your surgery and how to take care of yourself afterward, and it’s essential you can follow those for the best results and for your best health. We will also plan for what amount of help you will need in your recovery. It is important to plan out your support system to help get kids to and from school, sports practice and meal prep or regular diapering. Turns out as a mom who works outside the home, I am quite familiar with what we need to have in place after your procedure to set us all up for success in plastic surgery and recovery.
You Are a Good Candidate for Plastic Surgery If:
- You are healthy both physically and mentally.
- Your BMI is less than 35.
- You do not smoke.
- You have an optimistic and realistic attitude about your desired results.
Health Concerns
You may not be a good candidate for cosmetic surgery if you have serious health issues. However, some health problems will not impact your ability to undergo plastic surgery. For example, if you have high blood pressure or diabetes, that’s OK as long as you are controlling these conditions with medication and see your primary care doctor regularly. Many people ask about thyroid conditions like hypothyroidism; we can perform plastic surgery procedures as long as it is controlled with prescription medication.
If you can, don’t plan to lose significant weight after surgery. Instead, plan to have your cosmetic procedures done after your weight loss to optimize your results.
When you schedule a consultation with Tannan Plastic Surgery, as your female plastic surgeon, I will personally review your medical history with you, your goals and motivations for undergoing surgery, and your lifestyle. Are you the sole caregiver for elderly family? Or do you have two little ones at home and a husband who travels quite a bit? We will talk about the pros and cons of different surgeries as they pertain to your unique situation, from a health and overall life standpoint. Like all surgeries, there are risks involved in cosmetic procedures, and when you come for your consult, we invite you to ask us any questions and share your concerns.
