What differences have I seen as a female plastic surgeon?
Recently I published an article studying the effect of gender on our recommendations to women receiving breast reconstruction by surveying plastic surgeons nationwide. We found that most female plastic surgeons (myself included) preferred implant-based breast cancer reconstruction over autologous flap-based breast cancer reconstruction when choosing surgery for themselves. In contrast, male plastic surgeons favored flap-based breast reconstruction.
There are many pros and cons to both approaches to surgery. This study revealed that we as female plastic surgeons put ourselves in the perspective of the patient differently than our male counterparts. We also tend to prefer the quickest recovery possible to get back to our active lives after breast reconstruction!
